July 29, 2014 (Monticello - Corporate Office)
Monticello, IA – On Thursday July 24, IAS Interns and employees spent the day participating in the annual intern industry tour. The group of 17 first traveled to Rentech Nitrogen in East Dubuque, IL and then later that day they traveled to Big River United Energy in Dyersville, IA.
At Rentech Nitrogen the students had the opportunity to listen to a presentation from Jim Gau, Production Manager, Corey Lawler, Production Manager of Upgrade, Larry Flogel, Safety & Security Manager, and Steve Sheline, Regional Sales Manager. They presented on the different aspects of the plant, the basic chemistry behind the products they produce, and processes they complete to produce the products. Once completed with the presentation, Jim, Corey, and Larry split the IAS Team in to three groups and started the tour of the facilities. Throughout the tour the group was able to see the plant production, storage, safety, and loading. The Rentech Nitrogen tour provided the interns a great learning experience of fertilizers and nitrogen products IAS uses in our Agronomy business unit.
After the Rentech Nitrogen Tour, Steve, Corey and Larry joined the group and provided lunch at Caroline’s Restaurant in Dubuque, IA. This gave the group an opportunity to network and ask more questions to Steve, Corey, and Larry. After lunch was completed, the IAS group departed for Big River United Energy Group in Dyersville, IA.
Once at Big River United Energy Group, the IAS group was greeted by Gary Wessels, DDG Sales & Grain Buyer, and Ed Roling, Production Coordinator. Gary presented the group with a short presentation and video on the production and benefits of ethanol. After the presentation was completed, Gary and Ed split the IAS Team into two groups and started the tour. On the tour of Big River United Energy, interns were able to see the production of ethanol, storage, rail loading, grain unloading and the testing laboratory. At Big River United Energy Group, the interns were able to have a first-hand view of what happens to some of the grain at IAS.
The overall day was an outstanding experience for the interns and the day provided additional value to the summer internship program. We would like to extend a large thank you to the IAS Leadership chaperones and our business partners, Rentech Nitrogen and Big River United Energy for providing the tours. A special thank you to our business partner United Suppliers for helping arrange the Rentech Nitrogen Tour.
