Spring Is Coming. Is Your Herd Ready?

Under 45 days til Spring! This winter came early and surely held on, which has been a challenge in the livestock world. As temperatures begin to rise, we need to remember that ventilation and dry bedding become priority in keeping cattle healthy. It is time to start opening up our barns to prevent stagnant air. The fluctuations in temperatures are challenging but with daily monitoring and adjustment of curtains and ventilation fans we can help mitigate the stress.

As stored feeds will begin to thaw, it is important to monitor intakes to ensure the correct nutrients are being fed every day. Cattle maintenance requirements will start to decline as temps warm up. Work closely with an IAS Nutritionist to test forage and adjust rations as needed.

Warmer weather gives us an opportunity to start running footbaths again! Having cows pass through these a few days a week can help get ahead of hoof health issues. As important as it is to set them up, it is just as important to clean them out and change solutions. Healthy hooves are essential to a healthy cow!
